CHAPTER 23
I rushed outside to my 2011 Chrysler 300 M. My nerves were frazzled. I started fumbling with the keys, looking for the alarm box to unlock the doors. I found it and rushed in the driver’s seat. As I locked the door, I thought,I haven’t been this upset in a long time. How could this muthafucka still be around? I know he killed my daddy. I sat there with thoughts going through my mind. I heard my evil stepmother one day as she had a conversation on the phone.
“Yeah, I got the little bitch here with me. Um um, Ms. Bertha better be glad I got respect for her because I would have let her little ass get snatched up by the state.”
I heard her say, “WhyI’m being mean to her? What you mean? I’m not being as mean to her ass I wanna be. She the reason my husbandain’t here today–– her and her mammie. I heard her ex-boyfriend, some dude from the North Side named Chano, killed him, but you know people not gon’ tell the police what they know, so his death is just another senseless murder gone unsolved here in Chicago.” I heard the sadness in her voice as she started to cry. “I can’t get past the fact that he loved that bitch, Nitria far more than he loved me. I have loved him since the day we met. I will never understand why he chose to leave us.” I listened as she sat there and blamed my fatherfor his own death. “Okay girl, I will call you later.” She hung up from her call.
When I heard her end her call, I ran back to the room I was sleeping in while I was there, crying and full of hurt. Till this day I think she knew I heard her conversation.
Two years had gone past since my daddy died. I never knew what happened. Whenever I asked Granny B, she would always say,“Nowdon’t you worry yourself, Just know he is in the arms of the Lord, and he safe now.” She always had a sad look on her face and a defeated sound in her voice, but she always tried to make me smile and keep going on with my life.
Just the mention of his name sent me running in fear. I felt my phone vibrate on my lap. It startled me, bringing me back to my reality. I looked at the screen and saw Jaquan’s face on the screen. He always knew the right moment to call me. “Hello babe,” I answered in a sexy, seductive voice.
With his deep, sexy voice, as if he was singing to me, he said,“Hey, babe, I need to see you tonight; we need to talk. Can you make time for me?”
I was concerned with the seriousness in his tone. “Yes, but what’s wrong? Did something happen? As soon as I’m done with this meeting tonight, meet me at our spot.”
“Okay, and Beauty, you know I love you right? I would never do anything to hurt you.
